A DI box is a small unit with one main function: it converts an unbalanced instrument or playback device signal into a balanced one, which you send to the mixing console via XLR cable over twenty or fifty metres without hum or loss of high frequencies. If you've ever connected a laptop to a distant mixing console and experienced a hum that only increases with volume, you've encountered the exact problem a DI box solves.
Our rental range includes the Millenium DI-33. Use it when an acoustic guitar with pickup, bass guitar or keyboard is not directly at the mixing console, or when you're playing music from a laptop on a lectern at the other side of the hall. Most DI boxes also include a ground lift switch to eliminate hum caused by the stage and mixing console being plugged into different power outlets.
We'll also explain when you don't need one. If the laptop or player is right beside the mixing console, a standard jack or RCA cable is sufficient, and an additional unit in your quote is unnecessary. Similarly, you don't need a DI box for microphones, as they are already balanced and connect directly to the console via XLR cable.

A DI box converts the signal to balanced, so it travels via XLR cable without noise.
Do I need a DI box for my mixer?
Only when the monitor is far from the mixing console or when noise is present, as they are connected to different power outlets. If the monitor is placed directly at the console, a short cable with a jack or RCA connector is sufficient. For long runs across a venue, a DI box ensures a clean signal, with noise increasing as volume increases.
Do I need a DI box for microphones?
No. Microphones have balanced outputs and connect directly to the mixing console via XLR cable, even over long distances. A DI box is intended for instruments and playback devices with jack or RCA outputs. If your quote includes only microphones, stands and cables, a DI box is not required — we will check this for you instead.
